Frequently Asked Questions

What fitness level do I need?
This is a high-difficulty trek with long days, steep sections and high passes over 5,000 m. Excellent fitness, prior acclimatization and mountain-hiking experience are required.

When is the best time to go?
It’s possible year-round, but the dry season (May–September) offers firmer trails and clearer skies. The rainy season (Dec–Mar) brings lush scenery but slick terrain—extra caution needed.

Do I need to book in advance?
Yes—book at least 3 weeks ahead (longer for June–August) to secure guides, logistics and campsites.

What if it rains?
The trek runs rain or shine. Bring a rain poncho or waterproof shell and keep gear in dry bags. Rain can make certain passes and descents more demanding.

Is Rainbow Mountain entrance included?
Yes—entry to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca or Palcoyo, depending on route) is included, along with other required access fees.

Is the Cusco Tourist Ticket required?
No. The Ausangate circuit does not require the Cusco Tourist Ticket; specific local entries are covered in the package.

Can I rent gear or hire pack animals?
Yes—sleeping bags and trekking poles can be rented in advance. You can also hire personal horses/mules for extra load, arranged ahead of time.

Water, toilets and cell signal?
Water refills at camps/hamlets—always use purification. Toilets are basic; showers not guaranteed nightly. Cell signal is very limited across most of the route.
