Frequently Asked Questions

What fitness level do I need?
This tour is of easy to challenging difficulty. It includes cultural tours (easy) and two high-altitude hikes: Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake. Good physical condition, prior acclimatization, and no heart or respiratory issues without medical authorization are recommended.
What is the best time to go?
It can be done all year round. The dry season (May–September) offers better conditions for hikes and clear skies. In the rainy season (December–March) the landscape is greener, but the terrain can be slippery and greater caution is required, especially at high altitude.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. Entrance tickets to Machu Picchu, train tickets, and access to archaeological sites are limited. We recommend booking 3–4 weeks in advance and longer in high season (June–August).
What if it rains during the tour?
The tour is not canceled due to rain. Bring a rain poncho or windbreaker/rain jacket and protect your belongings with waterproof covers or dry bags. On Rainbow Mountain and Humantay, rain can make the trail more demanding.
Are the tickets included?
Yes, the package includes the Machu Picchu entrance ticket, train and bus transportation, and the entries/tickets to the sites indicated in the program itinerary (as per contracted details). Optional access to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain requires reservation and an additional payment, subject to availability.
Can I rent equipment?
For high-altitude hikes you can rent trekking poles (with rubber tips) in Cusco or at the starting point. On the Vinicunca route there is usually an option for horses managed by local residents (direct payment, subject to availability).
What about my luggage?
Carry only a small backpack with what you need each day (water, warm layers, camera, etc.). Main luggage can remain at your hotel in Cusco or in storage at the accommodation in Aguas Calientes when applicable.
Are there water, bathrooms, and signal along the route?
In Aguas Calientes and at the Machu Picchu entrance there are restrooms (additional cost). On Rainbow Mountain and Humantay there are rustic bathrooms near the start of the trails. Inside Machu Picchu there are no bathrooms. Bring water in a reusable bottle (max. 600 ml in Machu Picchu). Cell signal is limited in the citadel and on high-altitude sections.
